3 lbs. russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

3 tbsp unsalted butter

3 tbsp all-purpose flour

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp salt

½ tsp black pepper

½ tsp nutmeg (optional)

1 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
Instructions

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and butter a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat, add garlic, then whisk in flour for 1-2 minutes. Slowly stir in milk and cream until thickened. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

Layer potato slices in the dish, pour sauce over, and sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Repeat layers, finishing with cheese.

Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 25-30 minutes until golden and tender.
