Ingredients

  • 3 lbs. russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter

  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ tsp nutmeg (optional)

  • 1 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional)


Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and butter a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  • Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat, add garlic, then whisk in flour for 1-2 minutes. Slowly stir in milk and cream until thickened. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

  • Layer potato slices in the dish, pour sauce over, and sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Repeat layers, finishing with cheese.

  • Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 25-30 minutes until golden and tender.

  • Let rest for 10 minutes, garnish with parsley, and serve warm.
