Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups (320 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Optional: ¼ cup (25 g) colored sanding sugar, ½ cup (90 g) chocolate chips, or royal icing

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, then mix in vanilla.
  • Gradually add flour and salt, stirring until just combined.
  • Shape dough into a disk, wrap, and refrigerate for 30–60 minutes.
  • Roll dough to ¼-inch thickness and cut into Halloween shapes. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Optional: sprinkle sanding sugar or press chocolate chips into dough.
  • Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 12–15 minutes until edges are lightly golden. Rotate sheet halfway through.
  • Cool 5 minutes on baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack.
  • Decorate cooled cookies with royal icing, chocolate drizzle, or sanding sugar.
