  • 8 cups (1.9 liters) water or chicken broth
  • 3 medium potatoes, diced
  • 4 cups chopped cabbage
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 carrots, sliced (optional)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter

Instructions

  • Sauté onion, garlic, and carrots in oil until fragrant.
  • Add ham bone, water or broth, bay leaf, and thyme. Simmer 60–90 minutes.
  • Remove bone, shred meat, and return it to the pot.
