Ingredients

Scale

  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (113 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 medium apples (about 600 g), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/3 cup (67 g) brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (16 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup (90 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup (75 g) cold unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup (80 ml) salted caramel sauce
  • Flaky sea salt, for finishing

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line an 8-inch or 9-inch square pan with parchment paper.
  • Mix flour, granulated sugar, salt, and melted butter until a crumbly dough forms. Press evenly into the prepared pan.
  • Bake the crust for 15 to 18 minutes, until lightly golden around the edges.
  • Toss sliced apples with brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and vanilla.
  • Spread the apple mixture evenly over the warm crust.
  • Mix flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon for the topping. Cut in cold butter until coarse crumbs form.
  • Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apples.
  • Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, until the topping is golden and the apples are bubbling.
  • Drizzle warm salted caramel sauce over the baked bars and sprinkle lightly with flaky sea salt.
  • Cool completely, refrigerate for at least 1 hour for cleaner slices, then cut and serve.
