  • 1/3 cup (67 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons (85 g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup (75 g) dried cranberries
  • 1 tablespoon finely grated orange zest
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) cold heavy cream, plus more for brushing
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (120 g) powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt, then stir in the orange zest.
  • Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture until coarse crumbs form with a few pea-sized butter pieces remaining.
  • Gently fold in the dried cranberries.
  • Whisk together the egg, heavy cream, and vanilla in a separate bowl.
  • Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir gently until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently shape it into a round about 1 inch thick.
  • Cut the dough into 8 wedges and transfer them to the prepared baking sheet.
  • Chill the shaped scones for 15 to 20 minutes, then brush the tops lightly with cream.
  • Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, until golden around the edges and set in the center.
  • Whisk together powdered sugar, orange juice, and orange zest to make the glaze.
  • Cool the scones slightly, drizzle with the orange glaze, and serve.
