Ingredients

  • 1 sponge cake (8-inch), cubed
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy cream, whipped
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons strawberry syrup or jam
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Heat milk, sugar, and cornstarch in a saucepan, stirring until slightly thickened.
  • Temper egg yolks with warm milk mixture, then return to the pan and cook until custard thickens.
  • Stir in vanilla and allow custard to cool.
  • Arrange half of the cake cubes in a serving dish.
  • Drizzle lightly with strawberry syrup.
  • Pour half of the custard over the cake layer.
  • Add a layer of sliced strawberries.
  • Repeat with remaining cake, custard, and strawberries.
  • Spread whipped cream evenly on top.
  • Chill for 2–3 hours before serving.
