- 1 sponge cake (8-inch), cubed
- 2 cups whole milk
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 3 egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup heavy cream, whipped
- 2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
- 2 tablespoons strawberry syrup or jam
- 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
Instructions
- Heat milk, sugar, and cornstarch in a saucepan, stirring until slightly thickened.
- Temper egg yolks with warm milk mixture, then return to the pan and cook until custard thickens.
- Stir in vanilla and allow custard to cool.
- Arrange half of the cake cubes in a serving dish.
- Drizzle lightly with strawberry syrup.
- Pour half of the custard over the cake layer.
- Add a layer of sliced strawberries.
- Repeat with remaining cake, custard, and strawberries.
- Spread whipped cream evenly on top.
- Chill for 2–3 hours before serving.
